At Unpacked 2022, Samsung launched its all-new “UTG” Ultra-Thin Glass solution for foldable smartphones. The new glass is one-third the thickness of a human hair and is introduced on Foldable devices – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 for increased durability and Strength.
However, this new glass technology does more than just increase screen strength or durability for new foldable devices. Let’s look at its aspects.
According to Samsung, the new ultra-thin glass is produced with a high-precision manufacturing process that can produce folding glass on a large scale.
How is it made?
First, a special coating is applied to the glass surface based on the size and shape of the product. Second, is the cutting process based on the final measurements of the product, while ensuring smooth edges.
The glass is then placed between two rotating rollers to smooth out the edge cuts. This process polishes the surfaces to a smooth, even, and uneven shape.
As revealed, Samsung has created a special process to remove impurities from the surface to reduce the possibility of the slightest scratches or cracks on the surface or near the edges. The whole scenario helps reduce the stress level on the glass once it is folded.
To increase the quality and resilience of the material, the glass is reinforced through heat and chemical treatments.

As shown in the video, these glasses have been subjected to a series of rigorous tests to ensure quality and durability before reaching consumers, including extreme bending tests.
It must be mentioned that the glasses have been tested for folding and unfolding actions up to 200,000 times, which is amazing.
However, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 are not the only devices with this technology. As the Korean technology manufacturer has promised, it will further improve its ultra-thin foldable glass in the future with its advanced manufacturing process.
